West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Campus,
651 and 671 MacArthur
West Los Angeles, CA
2025
I am incredibly proud to have been a part of this project.
The 2022 master plan for the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Campus opened up under-utilized land at 651 and 671 MacArthur Avenue to create 148 new units of affordable housing exclusively for formerly homeless veterans and at-risk veterans and their families. This development is part of the 1,200+ new units of the same nature to come online for the greater LA veterans community, allowing quick and local access within walking distance to important services for residents.
It’s an absolute tragedy seeing people who gave so much to serve our country return to society that sometimes leaves them behind. It’s unacceptable and a massive failure to those who have served. This project, as part of the larger initiative, makes me feel like I contributed a small piece to that goal of progress.
My team and I leveraged heavy drone use and longer lenses to compress the campus space and make these projects feel more tightly nestled into the larger campus. This also allowed us to bring the West LA skyline just a little closer for a better sense of place.
On the ground, we were able to showcase the Spanish colonial revival style of the exterior as well as unique details like the emergency vehicle access that surrounds the facility. The luscious lawn, large amounts of open space outdoors and large pet areas (since many vets depend on service and companion animals) were just some of the special features designed with the veterans community in mind.
