Uchi West Hollywood
West Hollywood, CA
2024
A lot of love and thought went into this one. I think that’s apparent, even in the first frame.
Uchi, meaning home, was designed to mix calculated Japanese design with the essence of Southern California contemporary-modern design. One of the most interesting aspects of this project is the millwork. All lumber was sourced locally from fallen and removed trees around LA County via Angel City Lumber. Japanese-inspired joinery was made visible to celebrate the design rather than conceal it, and showcasing the imperfect, organic nature of the slabs pays homage to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi – finding beauty in imperfection and the natural cycle of growth and decay. Nearly 26 tons of timber were milled and upcycled into this space, creating a warm and welcoming dining experience. The exquisite lighting design really brings it home.
